FORMATION PERIODS

He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and they remained with Him that day (Jn 1:39).

Religious formation is a lifelong process. However, candidates who aspire to become religious sisters in the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary (DM) are required to pass through four main stages of formation, namely: Pre-Postulancy (Aspirancy), Postulancy, Regency, and Canonical Novitiate. Each stage has its own distinct purpose, discipline, and formative emphasis, and each normally extends for a period of one year.

Aspirancy

PRE-POSTULANCY (ASPIRANCY)

AIM

The aim of the Pre-Postulancy is to help the aspirant, who has accepted the call to religious life and entered the DM community with a strong desire to live a life of total surrender to Jesus the Word, to fix her gaze on Jesus – the ultimate goal – and to discern her vocation more clearly.

OBJECTIVES

  • To provide training that enables the aspirant to know Jesus the Word more intimately, to reflect on her life and life situations in the light of faith, and to grow in her relationship with the Blessed Mother and the saints.
  • To help her understand herself better, while offering encouragement to discover and develop her talents, and to grow in the simplicity of life and sense of responsibility characteristic of the Daughters of Mary.

To form the candidate in human, Christian, religious, and DM values and attitudes, enabling an integrated personal growth

Postulancy

During the postulancy period, a gradual growth towards the status of true discipleship takes place.

AIM

This stage is intended to help the postulant gradually detach herself from personal interests and enter more deeply into the path of discipleship, while growing in the spirit of the Founder and learning to share the experience of the Word received through its proclamation.

OBJECTIVES

  • To prepare the candidate to freely and consciously choose consecrated life. Through meditation on Sacred Scripture, she learns to evaluate life experiences rationally and grows in hope and trust in God.
  • To introduce her to the special charism of the congregation—the proclamation of the Word—through home visits and parish ministry, enabling her to collaborate with the sisters in mission.
  • To foster essential qualities such as openness of heart, honesty, responsibility, obedience, optimism, and deep faith.
  • To deepen her relationship with Jesus the Word and to cultivate a filial dependence on the Holy Mother.
  • To promote moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social growth through classes, prayer, and outreach activities.
  • To help her recognize her personal identity and mature into a well-integrated and authentic personality.

Finally, under the guidance of the Mistress, the postulant evaluates her divine call and discerns her ability to live according to the DM identity and style of life.

Regency

During the regency period, candidates learn to assume personal responsibilities, fulfill them faithfully, and live harmoniously in communities consisting of members of different ages and personalities.

AIM

The aim of regency is to train the candidate to accept the challenges and hardships of community life joyfully, to take up her cross daily, and to follow Jesus more closely.

OBJECTIVES

  • To deepen awareness of the mission of the Daughters of Mary by assisting the sisters in various ministries of the congregation.
  • To participate responsibly in community life as a sister-in-formation, under the guidance and authority of the Superior.
  • To take part in parish activities and home visits along with the sisters.
  • To responsibly manage personal time for prayer and deepen her personal experience of Jesus.
  • To integrate and live out the values and practices learned during postulancy within the community context.
  • To actively participate in group activities, value silence and solitude, and engage in spiritual exercises with devotion and maturity.

Canonical Novitiate

“Therefore, I will now allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her” (Hos 2:14).

The novitiate is the heart of religious life, as it lays a strong and enduring foundation for the spiritual journey. It is a privileged time when religious life is lived most intensely, and deep interior joy is experienced. Truly, it is the golden age of religious formation.

AIM

The aim of the novitiate is to live a life of total dedication and loving obedience to Jesus, the Master and Lord, through deep meditation on the Word and faithful assimilation of the DM way of life, in imitation of Jesus who was pure, poor, and humble.

OBJECTIVES

  • To help the novice gain a clear and mature understanding of her divine vocation and of the call, mission, and charism of the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary.
  • To foster an experience of communion through community life and to form the novice’s heart and mind according to Gospel values.
  • To facilitate an in-depth study of the rules, constitutions, and traditions of the congregation, enabling her to imbibe the authentic DM spirit.
  • To examine the novice’s readiness, motivations, and goals, and to help her grow in evangelical renunciation.
  • To nurture the interior life of the Mother of God, who responded to God’s call with freedom and love and faithfully pondered all things in her heart (cf. Lk 2:51).

The novice, who has grown in faith during aspirancy and in hope during postulancy, now deepens in love during the novitiate. She experiences the goodness of the Lord through the master–disciple relationship. Each novice cultivates an ascetical life and personally embraces the DM lifestyle. In solitude, she nurtures a deep friendship with Jesus the Word. With single-minded dedication to being conformed to Christ, she encounters Jesus through the prayerful reading and meditation of Sacred Scripture. In religious character formation, the novice prepares herself for total self-surrender—renouncing personal ambitions, rights, and freedoms—with her eyes fixed on the Kingdom of Heaven. Thus, abandoning herself entirely to God’s loving care, she experiences the joy and fulfilment of consecrated life. As she tastes the love of Jesus, she grows steadily in the joy of joyful abandonment.
